Glendora Ridge Road The Glendora Ridge Road, in the LA County mountains, is a fantastic windy up & down 2-lane well maintained road; not always open, especially in the winter, but when it is open there usually is very little traffic. I've traveled it several times over the last 8 years in 3 different sports cars: a '64 TR4, a '81 Porsche 911SC, and a '92 Porsche 968. The most traffic I ever encountered was about 5 cars or 3 motorcycles or 6 bicyclist. Of course, I always go during the week, as I bet it's a little more traffic on the weekends since it's so close to Los Angeles/OC.

Rt. 18 – Rim of the World Highway From the Rt. 18 Waterman Avenue exit on the 210 you start uphill. Wildwood Park is an ideal location to regroup but it also has a homeless population and the restrooms are weekend only. Soon, the four lane highway climbs towards Lake Arrowhead (elevation: 5,174′) with mostly sweeping turns and incredible views of the Inland Empire. Rt. 18 narrows to 2 lanes after Rt. 138. The best view/photo opportunity is Red Rock Scenic Overlook; enter latitude: 34.224082, longitude: ‑117.239064 in your GPS or you’ll sail by. Past the Lake Arrowhead turnoff Rt. 18 continues to climb towards Big Bear (elevation: 6,752′) while winding through mountain forests and the village of Running Springs (elevation 6,109’). Traffic is usually light to moderate.
Rt. 38: Big Bear to Yucaipa This is a less known part of Rim of the World Scenic Byway. From Rt. 18 east of Big Bear (elevation: 6,752′) you start a gradual climb in mostly open alpine terrain to Onyx Summit (at 8,443 ft. the highest mountain pass in Southern California). Past Onyx Summit you head downhill through sweeping turns with mountain views. Much of this a Porsche will go about the speed limit with your foot off the gas pedal—there are a few turns where the brake pedal will be useful. There’s a stretch through the woods including the village of Angelus Oaks as you continue down towards the valley of Mill Creek just before Yucaipa. Traffic is usually light. People who’ve “ridden shotgun” say they were glad they didn’t have to drive and could just admire the view. In late-August through September, check out the orchards of Oak Glen for fresh varietal apples that taste like they were just picked (the were) and real apple cider.
