The official job description of the Zone Representatives is to be responsible for the welfare and progress of Regions within their Zones. They are a bridge between the National and local organizations, working on behalf of the Regions. They are a management resource for the Regions in their zone, and represent the Region's and membership's interests at the National level.
This means they work for the region presidents, assisting as possible and necessary with ensuring smooth and effective region governance; as well as taking the regions thoughts, opinions, ideas and suggestions to the national organization to ensure that the club is responding to and reflecting the will of the membership. At the same time, the Zone Rep works for the national president, communicating club policy to the regions. This is particularly important when it comes to the areas of insurance, liability and risk management. The Zone Rep should be the first person the national president, or anybody else on the national staff, calls whenever something comes up regarding a region, its events or its membership. Similarly, the Zone Rep should be the first person anyone on the region should call if they have an issue that they believe needs to be elevated to the national level. And of course, the Zone Rep is there to answer any questions or, if they can't answer it, to direct one to the correct national staff person to get an answer.
So how is this accomplished? Primarily by being visible and approachable. This means travelling and attending regional events; meeting the membership and listening to what they have to say; often volunteering and working along side the membership at their events. With a zone the size of Zone 8 (13 active regions), this makes the job a very busy one, often requiring travel two or three weekends a month. Of course, being constantly available by phone or email is also part of the equation. Additionally, Zone Reps are frequently involved in special projects at the national level, or perhaps they still volunteer in their home regions as well!
The EC asks that all national staff members, Zone Reps included, submit quarterly reports documenting their activities. These reports are also posted here so that you may see Zone 8 from a different angle, through the eyes of the Zone Rep.
